Testimonial

The lawn at the back is looking in really good shape and it is quite amazing how much it has recovered. The front lawn is also looking much better so thank you again for what you did last month.

At this stage I think it’s fair to say that our grass appears to have benefited more from LM than my previous lawn company.

Aeration

Why is Aeration Essential and Beneficial?

  • Reduces the compaction of the soil.
  • Encourages healthy root growth.
  • Increases root depth.
  • Improves drainage.
  • Helps a lawn to become more resistant to drought.
  • Reduces water runoff.
  • Helps to break down thatch.
  • Allows water, air and nutrients to have direct access to the root system.
  • Makes it easier to over-seed your lawn.
  • Improves gas exchange between the soil and atmosphere.
  • Stimulates the soil microbes.

In order to achieve a nice lawn, aeration must be carried out annually.

When done correctly, aeration is one of the most beneficial processes for a lawn. This is completed towards the end of the year and is done by using a professional heavy machine, which pushes tine bars into the soil.

The application allows air and moisture to enter the soil, and the benefits from this will enable the lawn to improve.

What type of aeration is required?

The most important factor to consider is whether the type of aeration being offered is the correct type for your lawn, to ensure that it is beneficial. For example, if you have a clay soil-based lawn, then hollow-tine aeration would not provide any benefits, where as solid-tine aeration would.

If hollow-tine cores are left on the surface of a clay soil-based lawn, then more problems may occur, which may need to be addressed. The cores may cause more thatch and an uneven level in the lawn surface.

Although hollow-tine aeration is very effective, the vast majority of lawns in the UK only require solid-tine aeration. One of the advantages of solid-tine aeration is that no cores are left on the surface of the lawn, therefore there is no mess to clear afterwards.

Talk to your local Lawn Master depot for details. They will recommend the correct type of aeration for your lawn.

Hollow-Tine Aeration

In most cases, Lawn Master complete solid-tine aeration instead of hollow-tine aeration, as the majority of UK lawns only require this type.

This solid-tine respiration shown, is all that is required to open up pathways for air and water to reach the roots. This is especially recommended where the removal of a core will have little or no advantage at all.
